Hmmmm... I could see all the pictures, but I still can't read small text. My grandfather warned me this would happen.

I have just transcoded about 2 hours of movies to my Nokia cellphone. The screen is 176x144, and I added subtitles. And those subtitles, you can actually read those! But if you use a magnifying glass, then it looks weird, from a distance it is OK. Nice media player! Always have it with me. They made one mistake though (Nokia) if you put it in full screen mode, then there is a huge text 'Pauze' over much of the screen next to the pause button..... They never watched anything full screen it seems:-) Now one would think that such a small screen (176x144) is of no use. But I am blown out by it, have the sound on the bluetooth headset, and the phone on the desk in front of me, very nice to watch! It is a Nokia 3110 classic, and this is how I encode the movies for it in Linux: ffmpeg -i $1 -r 25 -s 176x144 -f 3gp -acodec libamr_nb -ab 12.2k -ar 8000
-vcodec h263 -b 100k -y movie.3gp Latest ffmpeg from cvs. You need the libamr_nb narrow band audio codec libs installed, and compile ffmpeg with support for it.
112.1 kbps.....Amazing, phone, radio, mp3 player, movie player, IR, bluetooth, camera, voice recording, internet, games..., but this movie capability is amazing. I think on a 2 GB microSD card I can get let's see: that makes 39 hours video !oops! ftp://panteltje.com/pub/nokia_3110_classic_movie_player_full_screen_img_1041.jpg Now there is a way to show your stuff ...

Of course this begs the question: Does mankind need all this stuff?
In 1/2h I'll be joining my wife for an early dinner in the kitchen, right next to a 1927 Western Electric phone with separate ear piece and crank. Fully working. This is the edition with built-in memory, slanted piece of oak, mini notepad, plus a pencil dangling off a polished brass hook. Works like flash memory which can be overwritten because the pencil is a deluxe edition with a fully integrated eraser.

If you and your better half are having dinner, why do you need the
1927 WE phone? My phone is in the drawer, in the kitchen, disconnected. The cell phones are in the bedroom, on vibrate.Of course we aren't in the kitchen having dinner either. We're sitting in a closet waiting for the tornado to go by (I hope).

When we dine, I kill the phones (do-not-disturb kicks in automatically at 7PM). Right now I'm by a land-line with earphones and microphone, or Skype likewise equipped ;-)
I've tired of holding a handset for an hour, during a conference, and I despise speakerphones.
There were a couple of tornados in Arizona... about 30 years ago ;-)

Old rule in the house here is that phones aren't answered during meals, prayers or devotions. That's what the answering machine in for :-)
Oh man, I hope so, too. And that the damage won't be too bad.

Yep, and to watch the weather radars. Looks like it's all gone over but the warnings.

Evidently you've got the laptop in there too to kill time while waiting.

You only need food, air, and shelter I suppose.
Nice, but won't help you on the road in the middle of nowhere. I have also been in many many many a hotel room, where there may be a teevee, but not my choice of programs, playing some selected music or video of my own late at night may make all the difference... Even on a plane.
But, yes it is al toys, just like to play :-)
Good. Unfortunately the folks in Arkansas and Kentucky did not fare so well :-(

Tennessee got it pretty bad too. I don't know if there was any damage around here but there were a couple spotted in the area. The warnings are pretty common around here. I gotta figure out the code. The sirens went off almost an hour before the storm cell got here and then there was another blast after the first, which I thought might be an "all clear", but there was a second, though smaller, cell after that. Maybe they just go off when the NWS issues a warning. In IL they go off when it's (past) time to cover your butt (one spotted on the ground and confirmed).
Wow. I guess in your area it would be good to keep a radio running on the local NWS frequency so you get the info fast.
-- Regards, Joerg http://www.analogconsultants.com/
You really need one with SAME, that gives an alert for your local area. I lucked out and found the current Midland model at a thrift store for $10. When I got to the register they told me it was half price day, so it was $5.33 cents, including the tax. I got home with it and discovered it was already programmed properly. :)
WSM reported that the tornados that touched down in Murfreesboro killed several people, and so many power poles were down that all the electricty was turned of in the city to speed up repairs.
-- And another motherboard bites the dust!
I've got four here. Two scanners where I am sure one can be programmed to do just about anything if I could only get the USB stream to work. The other two are those crank flashlights with NWS receiver. Heck, they even have a little power outlet to charge something else but I guess that's more of a gimmick.
Yeah, this one was bad. Glad that Keith and his family are ok.

I did the eye chart and ran the Sophos Conflicker tool. Nothing found. I do employ both a hardware and software firewall, keep my applications up to date, and use a fairly robust AV scanner called AVG.
Thus far it's kept my computer from getting bitten by the virus of the day.
I have a CCRadio but it's not area selective. I'm looking for a good weather radio but haven't found what I want yet. The emergency sirens are pretty good, though I'd like to know more about their exact meaning. It it's only "turn your radio on", that's probably good enough.
This one is simpler:
Thank you, Thank You, THANK You, THANK YOU. FINALLY, somebody that knows how to snip joined the group.
