extruded heatsinks

Hi,

Anyone know a source for the type of extruded aluminum heatsinks typically found in PC ATX powersupplies, that are suitable for mounting multiple TO-247 and TO-220 packages? I'd like to find a place that sells it by the foot and just cut and drill the package mounting holes. I'm thinking the type with the large horizontal fins that extend to make it look like a T if viewed from the end.

cheers, Jamie

I would go to a manufacturer's web site and find out who sells it. I bought some 3 foot lengths from Newark, but that was at least 5 years ago.

Several 1 foot (and shorter) sections available here:

You appear to pay a lot more for a big chunk in surplus, so it might be good to figure out what you actually need. $21 for 3 4inch sections seems a better deal than $60-100 for a 12 inch section, unless you actually need 12" all together.

Hi,

Here's a pic of one I took out of an ATX powersupply: "

Anyone know of a place that sells similar ones like that but with larger fins?

Check out Aavid. They make a variety of extruded heat sink material.

If you just want a few for a one-off project I strongly recommend finding something surplus that's close. If you really need a bunch then a place like Aavid is probably appropriate.

I see similar heat sinks at metal scrap yards, but never saw the T design. Then again, I hit the metal scrap yard about twice a year. I don't know where you live, but in the San Jose area, there are at least two such places. The one most people will go to is the Al Rem Center in Santa Clara. You pay 3x the spot price. I never asked them to do any fabrication, but they have the gear. The other place is Lasquad Metals in San Jose. I rather not dis the hood, but they look you over then buzz you in, so that should tell you something.
