extra wire on audio leads?

1/4" jack leads for pro audio: some of these consist of 2x mono 1/4" TS leads plus a single bit of flexible equipment wire, connected in a O.O pattern. Nothing is connected to the extra centre wire at either end... anyone know what this wire is for?

For grounding a turntable.

I've never seen a TT with quarter inch jacks before.

** Well, not one that plays LPs.

But a DJ style CD player that looks a bit like a TT might have 1/4 inch jacks and a grounding terminal on the back.

They all seem to be class 2 ( double insulated ) with no mains earth.
