might as well let it avalanche, the energy should be roughly the same

Well, the part survived, which is the aim of the surge supression activity.

You can record the energy level absorbed. Was it an amount that can be absorbed reliably at the repetition rate anticipated? (Tjmax)

What about other parts connected to the circuit? The 'load' ?

The difference is you could set the zener arrangement to conduct at 32v rat her than 40, reducing energy dissipation.
