Put Knoppix on it, and run the DOS app from emulation. Or dual boot. Don't shoot yourself in the foot (or the head), and make it a single, DOS, FAT volume.

Interesting. I also remember it being said back then that Intel set up a separate product line for the 486SX after it took off. Was it maybe the lower power versions i486SX-S and i486SXL then?

I don't remember there ever being a 487. I think it might have something to do with there not being appropriate interface pins. .
