No sign of any SMPS, but the blurb says there is surge protection so maybe a varistor and some diodes in the base.

The ones I've seen are definitely filaments, but those LED ones are very interesting. I wonder how much the reliability is affected by having so many LEDs in series?

I still use a Nokia 2115i. Works, does the job. It tells military time but only on its display. When you can see it which is difficult in sunlight.

My car is a Mitsubishi Montero Sport. That one can't be started by crank anymore but but my 1st car (16HP Citroen 2CV) could. In fact it had to be because as a student I could not afford a new 6V battery. Only VW Beetle drivers (the folks that got government subsidies) could. So I rode around sans battery for a long time.

Today we can all afford them, partly because the cheap ones are designed & made differently. (The first 2 I mean.)

We now have overhead cams, and the next generation electric valves. We have exhaust gas recirculation, fuel injection, electronic management, lean mix tures, multigrade oils, huge service intervals, reliability, properly regul ated charging, diesel engines, etc etc etc. The turbo dates back to the 170

0s though.

Other aspects of cars have come further since 1915. Cars then were generall y a nightmare to drive, and real death traps.

I've seen those in hanging lamps with the real lighting being ceiling-mounted LEDs.

Amazon shows them selling at 40W and 60W for a dim glow. That does seem horribly inefficient. A tungsten filament running so cool could be in a high vacuum with IR reflecting glass. Vapor pressure is just 1 Pa at

3477K. I wonder if they're 220V Chinese heat lamps resold as antique looking 130V lamps.

220v lamps dont normally light on 110. Heat lamps run at lower fil temp would be even worse - though some heatllamps do run at normal light output.

Here's a frosted halogen lamp rated at 230V 18W. Connected to 110V.

Sure, it's not very bright (there's a neon lamp in the transformer box mains switch for comparison), but at least it is visibly lit.

Visible light out is about proportional to V^3.4.

0.5^3.4 is about 0.1.

Yes, I meant GLS lamps. Halogens run hotter so do better

Those equations only hold at near rated voltage. I wish they predicted further out but they don't.
