I am automating homes for disabled persons -- blind, deaf, mobility impaired, cognitive impairment, etc. (should technology NOT be used to address their needs? Should they be REQUIRED to have IT staff on hand to maintain their kit?).

You want to be able to alert the occupant that he left the stove on; or the door to the refrigerator is open; or "something" is using water continuously (e.g., the flapper valve in a toilet is leaking); or the irrigation system needs servicing (leak/blockage); or, the garage door has been left open and it is getting dark; or, some wildlife is wandering around the back yard; or, you forgot to turn off the lights before retiring; or, ...

I.e., all of the things a younger, less disabled person would NOTICE and be able to act on (even if it means calling a plumber) if they shared the residence with the other individual.

The alternative is being forced to leave your home (where you've likely lived for many years and where you are comfortable and NOT NEEDING MEDICAL CARE) in favor of expensive housing in an assisted living facility at $100-300+ per day FOR THE REMAINDER OF YOUR LIFE.

There is little reason why technology can't be retrofitted to your existing home -- instead of forcing you to move into a home that was designed with technology in mind. It just means someone has to THINK about the problem instead of assuming everything has to conform to data center or commercial business layouts.

As you age, you will (sadly) encounter more and more people in such situations. And, their reluctance to move into such facilities. YOU will likely find yourself in the same situation, at some point in your life.

Perhaps you aren't "blind from birth" but lost your vision to diabetic retinopathy, an eye injury (trip and fall), macular degeneration, etc. You won't really care WHY you are blind. Or, stuck in a wheelchair. Or, deaf. And, someone deciding that you SHOULDN'T be able to maintain technology that enables you to live independantly DESPITE your disability will really strike you as the utmost arrogance and ignorance.

No, I am using a business as an example -- because residences (even SOHO) typically don't have the number and density of drops that I am addressing. The data center analogy was to address the fact that a large number of drops would have to ORIGINATE in a single location (because you don't have half a dozen "equipment closets" scattered around your residence to distribute the fabric).

A business sites workstations close together. A residence -- in the mind of someone thinking in terms of workstations/appliances -- would likely never see the density that I have (e.g., 144 drops in a 2000 sq ft building -- how many drops in YOUR place of business vs square footage).

I have to pick analogies that YOU can relate to as you are almost certainly not dealing with the same environment as I.

No. *1* FXS and *1* FXO. So the house can talk to a "land line" (if so equipped) and so REGULAR (nonSIP) phones can be used WITHIN the house. "Sorry, you will have to replace the telephone that you have used with something more techy -- because the designer didn't make allowances for your existing needs".

Allowing support for traditional wired handsets provides more flexibility. You can deploy (or, already HAVE deployed) a cordless telephone set. Or, an "answering machine". If you opt for cellular service, you don't have to carry the phone around the house with you -- or, rush to find it when it summons you (because you can connect your premisses wiring to the cellular network and rely on REGULAR phones distributed throughout the house to access that incoming call as well as originate calls).

And, once you have the gateway, then the *machine* can make use of the telephone network, not just the resident! ("Sarah, your Mom's toilet seems to be leaking. Could you please arrange for a plumber to come out and have a look at it? And, coordinate with your mom so she knows when to expect him? You may also want to remind her just before the appointment as she's getting forgetful...")

You seem stuck in your idea of how things SHOULD be just because of how they've been pitched to you. Instead, think of how things COULD be once you shed those preconceptions.

An assisted living home will cost you many hundreds of thousands of dollars, up-front (frequently non-refundable or with conditions on that) PLUS several thousand dollars per month (4-12K from what I've seen locally).

So, if you can stay in your home (where you are comfortable with the surroundings and memories) for 12 months, you'd pay-back a $50K investment in that one year.

AND, *still* have a house with those capabilities (added resale value) to sell at the time you opted to make that transition.

If, OTOH, you are forced to move into some other home that has been built with the technology in mind, then you incur the buying/selling costs, moving costs, adjustment trauma AND may find yourself leaving

*that* home in a year or two (when the house can't attend to your needs sufficiently). I.e., it is a worthwhile engineering effort to sort out how to retrofit technology to existing homes (OURS tends to be on the more difficult spectrum due to construction practices)

Blind doesn't mean "sees nothing". Rather, it means you have worse than

20:70 vision. Something that is pretty common as you age. Can you still read the markings on components without eyeglasses? As you age, more severe vision loss becomes more common. The wife of the couple we dined with yesterday sees only swirling colors and shapes in one eye, even less in the other. Yet, she is healthy, otherwise (we joke that she will likely outlive her husband ON WHOM SHE CURRENTLY RELIES).

I have "20-something" neighbors who frequently forget to close their garage door, at night (or, leave home during the day and leave it open with the house unoccupied -- most people have easy access to their home interiors THROUGH the garage as they likely don't lock the "interior door"). While not blind, they still failed to SEE that the door was left open. Sure would be nice if SOMETHING would notice this for them (and offer to rectify the situation).

Do you always remember when your laundry is ready to be moved into the dryer? Or, that the clothes in the dryer are likely dry -- or need to be removed PARTIALLY dry lest they get wrinkled?

Do you never forget to turn off a stovetop burner -- or an oven -- when you are in the middle of meal prep? Do you remember to set the timer if baking/cooking and need IT to remind you to check its progress? Ever fall asleep with lights on in the house? TV? Yard lights? Doors unlocked?

You're going to LOVE getting old and seeing how "defective" your brain has become! :>

Most places like these have IT contracts identical to medium and small business who are very experienced in this, usually with a 2 hour response if it is phone or Safety of Life problem, 4 hour response if it is critical interal IT systems, 48 hours for general IT work.

rightn and how often do people move tjheir stoves around, now you're talking like purpose built facility the exact same style used in retitrement villages etc. You keep moving the narrative, and frankly this has nothing to do with electronics, and is more suited towards being asked in alt.comp.networking.design

No, those are "retirement homes", "assisted care facilities, "memory care", etc., not "individual residences".

There is nothing life-critical about these things. If you step up to a critical care facility from just an "assisted living facility", then costs go up considerably.

MOST people don't need that level of care. MOST people don't want to be removed from their homes just because their spouse died or they are "getting forgetful".

They don't move their stoves around -- the drop is sited behind its current location.

But, the electronics that *feed* that drop may fail. Wire is perfectly good but the occupant needs to be *instructed* as to how to rejigger the switch to make the stove accessible again. Thinking that you need an IT person to make a house call because the resident (or friend thereof) can't follow directions like "unplug the cable that I am indicating and, when you've done so, I will indicate the new location for you to plug it in".

Or, "I'm sorry, the camera monitoring the approach to the front door has failed (or been damaged). I'll contact your designated representative to inform them of the need for service. But, you should be aware that the system will no longer be able to provide the following services to you..."

You're stuck thinking like an IT person and not thinking about how network

*technology* can be applied to other problem domains. Hence your thinking in terms of IP, ARP, etc. Were you surprised the first time you saw a "PC" being used as a cash register? Petrol pump? Surveillance system? There's nothing about "PC" that defines and limits its usage -- except the imagination of the designer. Likewise, nothing that limits the use of "network interface chips", MCUs, CAT5e to "IT". [My god, how do people deal with broken mice without having IT staff on call 24/7/365??]

You pay many thousands of dollars per month (after a large buy-in) in perpetuity for those abilities. And, most don't approach the level of integration I'm targeting.

It's electronics as it is used as an interconnect medium in an electronic system. How does it differ from a WiFi, Z-Wave, etc. deployment? Chances are, the "IT" folks are limited in understanding the design issues behind each of these things as their experience is with *deployment*. They wouldn't be able to determine if 144 WiFi connected devices could support a specific communications load RELIABLY.

The resemblance to "classical networking" is simply coincidence. I can use PoE without adhering to IEEE 802.3af-2003 or 802.3at-2009. I can use PTP without 1588. You only have to adopt a standard when other people are expected to interact with it. But, you can *benefit* from existing standards to the extent they coincide with YOUR needs.

No, the *examples* I try to offer as analogies change to get you to shed your preconceptions about how the technology CAN be used.

Architect more than IT contractor as an IT contractor would likely suffer from the same set of narrow mindset. An architect has likely already had to deal with things like structured wiring in homes, EV charging, solar installations, etc.

You are responding to Don Y. This is standard practice with Don Y. The nick posts almost exclusively off topic material (where the supposed connection to electronics design is tenious at best). Further, hang around the group long enough and you'll see the "moving narrative" play out time and again. This is the Don Y nick's way of trolling the group. It posts a vague description of some problem, purportedly seeking suggestions on ways to solve said problem. When a poster responds with a solution that is reasonable, given the vague description initially offered (and the initial descriptions are always vague, presumably intentionally so that responders can form wrong ideas from the vague post) then the Don Y nick always has some additional requirement that is critical to the problem or solution and that means the respondents given suggestions will not work. The actual "thing" the Don Y nick is requesting solutions for is kept hidden, with just enough extra "needs" dribbled out to shoot down every suggestion that is provided by those drawn in by the nick's trolling.

Take this one, for example, your post is now the 24th or 25th post in this thread, and only now did the Don Y nick reveal that this "network switch" for which he needed some form of "cabling to a connection point" is meant for a home setting where blind or otherwise handicapped individuals reside. The initial post was written to sound like Don Y was looking to install a business server rack in the back office of a business and interconnect that server rack to the internal network links of that business.

Yep, go back and read through other threads started by a Don Y post, or pay attention as Don Y posts future trolling threads. You'll see the exact same pattern play out every time. Initial post is vague and could be one of 1,000 possibilitites. As each poster responds, thinking Don Y is referring to possibility 392 out of 1,000, Don Y will dribble out some additional bit of narriative that changes the story such that the responder's suggestion can't possibly work. Another poster then posts presuming that given this new info that Don Y means possibility 512 out of 1,000. Don Y will again dribble out yet one more "need" that changes the story yet again and makes this new suggestion inapplicable. Rinse, repeat, and Don Y successfully trolls the group yet again.

Yet Bertrand Sindi seems incapable of adding Don Y to his kill file. Gotta wonder...

Thanks for heads up, I've actually been subbed to this group for years but have not had much time to read posts and I always skim over the subject and dont bother with stuff that doesnt interest me at the time, I've probably seen his wankery before, cant remember, I guess that says alot of what I think of him, I must only have responded given it is my area of expertise having been in the field for decades.

I'm seeing that now, forgive me, I am just getting over the flu, so my defences have been down for 2 weeks, it is my bad and the troll has been advised which newsgroup to take it to, but I'm betting he wont, either way my contribution to hte noise has concluded :)

This was my initial 4/17 post:

John confirmed that cables are routed through the floor and pointed out that only a *single* cable (fiber) enters the rack.

This made me realize that I was asking the question from the wrong point of view -- thinking that lots of "clients" would terminate at the rack. Hence my effort to "reframe the question" (also on

4/17!) from the "business with lots of clients to one server" perspective.

But, it made it clear that the "termination" is considered immobile. So, I don't have to accommodate moving the rack and, by extension, the means by which the client cables exit the building's structure.

It *seems* that this bundle of cables are expected to terminate in the rack -- that there is no other equipment (like a switch) located outside the rack to which they can terminate. So, it becomes, for me, a question of how to accomplish this in a variety of home architectures/layouts (the architect showing me how such cable masses can be accommodated in sample floor plans).

How the *user* interacts with this doesn't change my initial query. Any information I have added is solely to provide context as to why a "data center/business" solution would be grossly inappropriate. I should refrain from adding information that doesn't change your initial answer and let you think it was adequate.

Which is why "individual residences" are so appropriate for this sort of application.

Nope. Time is too precious to spend it "providing COMMODITY services". There's no profit (financial or moral) in that.

As I said, above, I have the answer I initially sought, thankyouverymuch (ditto John). That lets me greatly constraint my solution space. I can shift my attention back to the application domain instead of worrying about "mechanical details".

*You* (and others reading) may want to try spending a day (hour?) blindfolded. Or, wearing ear guards. Or in a wheelchair. It's an enlightening (and scary!) experience. But, may give you a better appreciation of what many face every day (and YOU may eventually face).

You'll likely develop a disdain for folks who ignore these issues in their designs -- ANY design (even can openers!) Of course, it won't HELP you once you're in that situation... :-/
