It's chaos out there. Web "radio stations" constantly require you to have this, that and the other plug-in, player, tool, whatever.

HD radio sure looks like what my former boss called "technology looking for a home".

But watch it: Some require a link to a certain "central processing site". When that site goes down one day you'll have another boat anchor :-)

Thanks. Looks like there are some but most also available in FM and the rest doesn't strike me much from a music genre POV. Maybe we are just too freaking old for "modern" stuff.

I won't go to Fry's any longer and Circuit city is history out here. But I'll be at BestBuy next week, to get a new cordless phone set. Want to try out the Panasonic DECT 6.0 series because it doesn't run on 2.45GHz (interference) or 5GHz (not enough range). Plus supposedly has ordinary AAA cells.

Oh yeah, they do, they call me whenever their sprinkler timer goes on the fritz. When do the new kids learn _not_ to rely on on-chip POR/BOR? Ever?

When I saw their canned stuff last time my impression was that over-the-air HDTV is of better quality. As long as there aren't any multipath cutouts, that is.

I ordered the Roku Soundbridge and a Linksys WAP54G

Hi Joerg,

Well, if you're near a big city (or have a good directional antenna) and receive your regular FM stations "fully quieted," other than displaying the song's artist and name, I would have to admit there's not a whole lot of advantage in HD radio over traditional FM. For those out in the boonies or traveling around, when the option degrades to "scratchy" FM, HD radio is better. (Although in *those* situations satellite radio also starts to look attractive, if you're willing to pay a subscription fee.)

From the broadcaster's point of view, the main advantage is being able to cover a larger number of people (=advertising revenue) for a given power level, and being able to chop up their allocated spectrum into several sub-channels, if desired (at the expense of audio quality), just as ATSC does.

What, you expect customer service or something? :-)

I am not going to indirectly finance guys like Howard Stern via a subscription.

Ok, but HD was (sparingly) advertized on FM for years now and nobody in our fairly large group of friends has an HD radio. That doesn't bode well for ad rates.

The other thing is, after experiencing those "digital cliff" DTV cutouts people in this area will be leery of anything digital in broadcasting.

But I get 50's and '60's rock 'n' roll on Sirius, AND Fox News, in my car. Never once listened to Stern.

I am amazed that guy is as popular as he is.

rest

Sure but AFAIU part of your Dollars will still end up in his pockets. Only over my dead body.

I don't need it. While driving I always find a nice station with country or bluegrass, in remote areas on AM. Plus there's a bunch of CDs in the car. Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, plus lots of country. Occasionally I listen to Spanish broadcast when there is something interesting, to learn the language.

For me I'd word it a bit differently: I am disgusted.

our TV=20

don't=20

signals=20

Oh fiddlesticks, they ain't gonna learn nuthin' o' the kind 'till there is some penalty for it.

true.

to take=20

Correct selection and orientation of antennas to defeat Multipath could help you a lot.

Consider the "audience". I tried it in order to have a proper viewpoint, I have one, HS is droll, boring, lame, insipid, and over enamored of vulgarity. Undifferentiated obscene anger at everything sans any thought.

Sometimes there are penalties of the kablouie kind. OTOH, those botched POR/BOR scenarios are part of my income when being contracted to "unbotch" those.

take

Not here. Biggest honking Channel-Master yagi there is, must be pointed towards the Bass Lake Grade because that's the only spot where (most) TV signals squeeze through. Believe me, I've spent hours on the ladder turning it until my back hurt. Analog works just fine in multipath, digital doesn't. So in July we'll lose some stations here :-(

Because of this sort of thing? It'd be hilarious, if it weren't so tragic:

Hint - listen to the interviewees' responses.

Cheers! Rich

Howard Stern, or dimbulb?

Service to my country? Been there, Done that, and I\'ve got my DD214 to prove it. Member of DAV #85. Michael A. Terrell Central Florida http://www.flickr.com/photos/materrell/

I'm sure he was referring to NymNuts or Slowman or (except for vulgarity) Larkin ;-)

That is sad :-(

HS is the topic. Though i can see the source of possible confusion. Dimbulb does seem to be more foul mouthed.

tragic:

And of course you are completely ignorant of how to get interviews like that. Glad you are part of the sheeple. Now post some electronics.
