Conditions that occur infrequently

The other UART post reminds me: Attracted by the DIP24 package, and the internal counter/timer, I nearly used the SCC2691 until I read what it says near the back of the datasheet, on page 19 or 20 depending on which version you have, about a "condition that occurs infrequently" and how the programmer should recover from it. You lose the utility of the counter/timer because you need it to detect "data stopped" conditons.
