We specially don't want to encourage it because they're all carriers.

Absolutely correct. It insures that what the data sheet designer sees, is what a user reading it will see, and that includes printing.

Most importantly, it guarantees that the 2-point "fine print" doesn't inadvertantly get enlarged to the extent that the user actually notices it.

Be careful here: you wouldn't want to insult any minorities.
