Beware of products sold under the neame 'Sweex'

To make a long story short: I have a Sweex WiFi USB stick, it loses connection every so many seconds. I have a Sweex card reader, it has a defective cable / connector and needs to be unplugged and plugged in again, with the card in the reader, to work. This needs to be done everytime you change the card in the reader... I have a Sweex USB2 PCI card to get extra USB ports, it causes all sort of data errors. Stops working all together at high room temps (30 C). I replaced it by an other make *with the same VIA chip*, and that one works perfectly. Inspection shows that Sweex just left out the decoupling caps on the board.... the holes are there..

So 'Sweex' seems to be an outlet for inferior crap. Stay clear of it.

perfectly.

You sure seem to have a lot of their stuff around, for it being so crappy and all. :)

As a percentage of the total it is actually very little. And for me: 3 strikes and they are out. Do you for for those crooks?

Which number is that in? I have been listening to the one about the low RFI MAXIM chip :-) Nice:-) What mike do you use (very good)?

Here are some pictures of the bad Sweex PCI to USB adaptor: ftp://panteltje.com/pub/Sweex_PCI_USB_adaptor_img_1429.jpg ftp://panteltje.com/pub/Sweex_PCI_USB_adaptor_img_1432.jpg Where is: C1 C17 C36 C38 and some other stuff? Lot of zig-zag traces to match delays?

Or somebody made a bad design and Sweex buys up the stuff at next to nothing? Unfortunately many computer shops here sell that brand, often the only thing you can get. Had to get a good one all the way from Germany (monodata.de, watch out they have this version too). In fact I ordered one with a NEC chip from them as I thought the problem was in the VIA chip with the Linux driver, although I did check the dataheet of the chip and modified the Linux driver... Anyways I got it from monodata, and it turned out to also have that VIA chip. So put it in the drawer.. But in the weekend (this is in the server) I decided to try the monodata one, as the Sweex had stopped working altogether as it was warm (30C) here... Now to my surprise the monodata worked 100 % OK, and no more errors. And it has one more USB out too, and was 1/2 the price of the Sweex... hehe :-)

Guess those few extra pennies you saved, must of been the caps that were never installed!

Well, excuse me! ;-) Does it really need a nose? ;) looks pretty good.

That's OK, just give me your shipping address and I will get a new sense of humor shipped out at my expense ASAP. ;-)

Indeed. I once bought one of their DSL routers. Total crap so I returned it and got my money back. I bought a 3Com instead which wasn't so much more expensive either but worked like charm.

Oops, looks like the direct link isn't displaying correctly. It's blog #12 (Part 2)

Yes, my hats off to the gray bearded designer of that chip. Obviously not a design they outsourced to a work experience kid in India.

It's a cheap Shotgun video mic from Jaycar:

That looks superb compared to my dodgy USB hub! At the end of the video I show photos of the dodgy one vs a good quality one.

OK, found it. Hey a ceramic resonator at 24 MHz??? LOL Or 23? Or maybe 25 hehe. Crappy soldering too, same I have seen here with a USB to RS232 adaptor.

Aha, strange, different impedance for near and far... Perhaps it switches in an amp or attenuator? Got to get one of those one day :-)

Nice tour of the Chinese factory, they have good stuff. Very young girls there on that assembly line.
