Another option is to run a U3 applications. Check Sandisk, that's what they do, for example for password protection routines.

What version of Windows? Basically, MSFT has been removing auto-run from Windows because it was such a huge security hole... Many computers have been taken over by so-called new thumb drives that had malware on them from the 'factory'.

My understanding is that only a CD rom will allow any autorun now.

If you know how to do it on a CD, then you should know how to it on a USB flash drive, how ever, those devices can be disabled for AutoRun just like CD's.

GOOGLE DOESN'T CARE. Their system is automated, hasn't been updated in >6 years and depends entirely on YOUR labor. Google only loses if your pageloads go to zero (along with 100,00 of your friends).

It's much more effective to take control of your own client rather than relying on GoogleGroups. Among (many) other spammers, my setup blocks

I simply blocked the whole google domain. Result: Spam drop to about zero :-)

I do, too, except I have a list of 43 white-listed (*) before the google, et al, delete.

It's news.individual.de. Why do you block that? I have never seen any spam from there. In fact, they place a 100 post/day cap on anyone by default. Can be increased if you ask and have a clean record, meaning no spam complaints against your account. But so far I never hit the cap.

I haven't had to block anything other than Google. That almost completely hosed off the spam but unfortunately also a few good guys. Unfortunately Thunderbird doesn't have much of a whitelist feature and I don't want to install or re-install stuff.

In this NG I see a lot of post that start with "RE:", meaning the OP came via Google. In European NGs I never see any, seems people over there all have their own Usenet access. Well, they also don't have overzealous AG's ...

Not advertising spam specifically... just Europeon nutcases ;-)

I think they are a pretty good group. Ok, some have political views that I will never understand, and never did even while living there. But I have not encountered any bullies from there. Like the kind of which we have some here with their expletives and all.

Does autorun somehow disable active antivirus protection?

Yesterday after MS update Tuesday I downloaded the files but held off on the install operation.

My active antivirus protection got triggered.

I laughed, realizing that the MS updates must indeed resemble a virus because of what they do.

I often wish that all the providers' gatekeepers were suddenly swept away like former union man[1] Reagan did with PATCO.[2] I believe 99.999% of those gatekeepers are WAY overpaid for what they actually do and they just keep their jobs by inertia.

If they were all out on their butts and their employers had a chance to replace them from the labor pool glut, in my dream version the new guysthat get hired in have found actual methods about how to deal with the problems which the previous ivory-tower dolts have never encountered.

A lot has to do with business ethics. Some companies have a very low ethics level and it doesn't take much to find out which those are ...

Unfortunately there's no neat way to copy my Agent filters to a text file. But I block gmail AND google groups.

Agent's filtering is quite nice... almost perfect... if they'd add some features from Newsproxy it would be perfect.

In Agent I simply set priorities... white list first then delete.

Same here. That drives my wife crazy at times. When I apply that sort of process to her honey-do list.

The meanest union behavior was experienced by the son of a friend. Got laid off in AZ along with others, couldn't find another union job, tried CA. Then lost his house. Why? Because he is barred from taking non-union jobs or they'd punish him.

AFAIK the bayesian "learning" filter cannot be applied to news accounts. Plus it does fail at times. On email that's not a problem because I always parse the trash folder carefully. Once it wanted to swallow a new (and urgent) assignment from a client. I mean, why don't those filters make sure that domains I have responded to in the past are ok?
