Automatic gain control

Hello!Does anybody have an idea of how to build an automatic gain control(AGC) circuit??? For exemple, amplify a signal (10mV signal or 20mVsignal) to 5V. Regardless of what is in the input, the output should be5V... something like this....I appreciate any help! Anything will be helpful, a tutorial, a link,the circuit ! :-)Thanks a lot!Victor

The varying content fo AGC can be as much a a few hundred Hz for rapidly (30 mph / 45 kph)+ moving cell phones in metropolitan areas.

OK, what is being described here in not auto-calibration but auto-ranging, oscilloscope style. Certainly not out of reach for most engineers here. I presume you would like an indication of present range, a detect range button, and an indication of range changes and input and output protection.
