Note the late correction "This story has been corrected to show that it was the defense attorney, not the judge, who suggested the prosecutor was trying to cause a mistrial". Rittenhouse is a dumb kid who went out into a riot carrying a rifle with the apparent intention of defending property in general, as opposed to some specific property that he might have a legitimate reason to defend, and ended up shooting a couple of people who were dubious about his intentions.

Shooting somebody who is breaking into your home is "defensive gun use". Carrying a rifle into a riot is an irresponsible provocation.
