Using a tube/valve, I have to agree. But still some nut will pat for it. I have smartened up a bit since I stareted thinking about all this, and IF a tube design were to ever happen, it would be class AB. They want to pay for the tube sound we got it. whaddya say to nine grand ?

** FFS - just use a good tube amp to drive the transformer/s in the speaker.

The measured THD of the whole speaker is under 0.03% above 100Hz at 90dB SPL.

No direct tube drive could ever get near that.

Actually you got a really good point there. Reallly high freqs can be handled by peizos, and lower freqs are mopre aptly handled by dynamics, but the nidrange is what wets the pants of the audiophiles.

Maybe that's what I should do. ;Deal with thte rest of it later.

You probably will have to. The key the Quad electrostatic's success was an astonishingly high resistance "conducting" layer on the membrane.

The capacitances per unit area involved were small, so the high resistance didn't stop them working, but it did stop the membrane distorting into little spikes under the influence of the electrostatic field.

One of my colleagues from Cambridge Instruments moved to Quad in the mid-1980's and told me a few stories when I ran into him after he'd been there for a few years.

Perhaps as well. Electrostatic speakers can be tricky.

This is somethng I find as bit hard to understand. At first one would htink the most conductive material would be the best, but apparently that is not so. Is it because of the delay lines and phase ?

Is it that in such a system, that a totally conductive membrane would negat e the effects of the delay lines they might call a crossover ? The array of coils an d caps that make the thing what it is, that is.

Also, I see somehting like 6 K as voltage. Is the actual voltae to be appli ed to be around that level ? From what I hear, the limiting point, if not r eached in excursion, means an arc between the electrodes. that determines i ts maximum output and power handling.

All in all, I have reached the conclusion that ESL is not the way to go for all ranges. As such, I will probably take an approach such as Martin Logan.

In same though, I can still do direct coupled, and an internal amp for everything.

My partner just showed me an articlde anbout speakers about like that, at least somwhat.

The price was $106,000 a pair. They included 400 watt amplifiers in each.

Anyway, if my speakers have top plug in the wally for the [polarizing voltage, they might as well do it all. This is my current idea.

if the membrane has low resistance the charge will crowd at the place of least distance so you don't get an even force on the whole surface of the m embrane
