Superimposed is the current and past situation, as in "place or lay (one thing) over another, typically so that both are still evident."
Imposed is no longer relevant, although it probably felt like that for a few centuries.

Those days are NOT gone, entirely. Parts of Seattle (the Denny regrade) were sculpted with that technology, and the cliffs around the edge regularly slump onto roads and railways. Drainage in the original landscape hasn't been fully engineered into the city yet, and the roots of trees are a big part of the solution so far.
