Most residential smart meters feature a built-in Remote Connect/Disconnect (RCD) service switch. This is an internal, heavy-duty internal motorized relay or contactor capable of breaking the main electrical feed into a building. How it is used: Utilities use this to remotely cut or restore power without sending a technician in a truck. Common triggers include account setups, moving out, non-payment, or critical emergencies. Not a safety lockout: While it can cut power, it does not create a visible, physical air gap. Line workers and electricians cannot use it as a safety "lockout/tagout" mechanism for manual grid or electrical maintenance.



Strategic Load Shedding & Dynamic Control: With the evolution of AMI 2.0, load management has expanded far beyond simple on/off commands. Advanced meters use internal scheduling software and real-time edge computing to handle grid stress without triggering a complete blackout: Strategic Load Shedding: During peak energy crises or extreme weather events, utilities can target specific clusters of meters to disconnect or limit power dynamically, rather than cutting off an entire distribution substation feeder. Protecting Vulnerable Customers: Automated AMI schedules can shut off power to standard facilities while explicitly bypassing homes that the utility database flags as requiring active life-support equipment.



Individual Appliance Control (Behind-the-Meter) An AMI meter cannot directly reach into a home electrical panel and isolate a single breaker, but it acts as a gatekeeper via Demand Response (DR) integrations: Home Energy Management Systems: AMI 2.0 meters feature edge-AI that parses individual appliance power signatures (a process called load disaggregation). Smart Device Communication: The meter communicates over localized wireless protocols (like Zigbee or Wi-Fi) to interface with smart thermostats, EV chargers, and water heaters. During peak grid demand, the meter signals these smart appliances to throttle down or cycle off, adjusting individual heavy loads without cutting the home's main electricity.
