Notice that everyone in the photo is ducking for cover. However, the kid is oblivious to what's happening, probably due to the tablet or smartphone in his hands. Also, to the right is a white hair photographer, who's hat was knocked off by the flying bat and may also have been hit in the head. My guess(tm) is that he was looking through the camera lens when the bat came flying his direction and only noticed it when it knocked hit hat off his head. Scary.

Notice that the father is leaning away from the flying bat, while his left arm is protecting his son in the opposite direction. Looks like two different reflexes acting simultaneously but in opposite directions.

Lots of (re)action in that pic.

He must have had less than a second to eveluate the situation and act. It's amazing how fast a person can react correctly in a complex, dangerous situation, without time to actually think. And the Dad looks like the only person who knows what he is doing.

Ex-Marine? The look of totally relaxed, almost casual, action, while everyone around looks totally afraid(??) is really striking (pardon the pun).

Jon

he also looks like the hulk

maybe it is just dad-mode

Having performed the human-air-bag function myself, I am still amazed by the instincts and precision shown there.

This one is even better, but one second is a long time compared to this guys reaction. It never gets old for me.

I wish there was a followup interview. Mikek

That lady looks impressed.
