Now lemme see, 74 - 32 = 42, 5/9 ~ 1/2, so 42/2 = 21. See, my net was right :-)
Mine tests every second. The hysteresis is set to cycle about the way the standard thermostat does, given the placement of the indoor RTD. The results are about right.
My gadget has a relay contact in parallel with the regular thermostat; we leave that on 45F (that 7C to you furriners) to keep the pipes from freezing. We drain them, too, for redundancy.

There's a 2.5 volt reference, used in the RTD circuits, and I thought it would be nice to report what the ADC (with its own ref) sees. It's pretty good. I'm using an Integrity Instruments pic-based i/o board for the ADC.
Yes, it's a netbook PC with a lot of battery hours, so it rides through moderate (hours, maybe) power fails. I tried to make it robust as to tolerating internet outages, powerfail/restarts, like that. Windows doesn't help a lot.
The serial poll good/bad counters indicate no power outages in 5 months or so. I expect some in the winter.

That is just a guess, of course.
The other method is simply password access to the "ftp site" as it relates to uploading.
So by directory or by access rights, it is quite easy to insure that the files that get looked at were developed and stored by his application only. A basic encryption would be easy too. An advanced encryption is easy with WinRar or WinZip even. Bada Boom, Bada Bing. Big bada boom.
Abe Lincoln used a direct cross reference lookup code that used a private key to encode and decode the message. He was a pretty smart dude.
The Acer Revo is a cool device. It also has the distinction of being fully capable of reading a blu Ray disc data rate optical device, as well as decoding it and pumping it out to an HDMI or DVI-D interconnection into an HDCP compliant display device. No small feat.
All for $200! PS You should UG the RAM to the full 4GB, and the HD to a 7200 rpm model if you want true, jitter free processing of such hi res video streams.

I'm kinda surprised there haven't been a whole slew of decently spec'd and priced tabelets for this holiday shopping season; my suspicion is that a lot of companies probably whipped together internal prototypes and were rather dismayed to find that a lot of what makes the iPad interesting is software that, to date, most companies other than Apple haven't paid all that much attention to. (Microsoft has had some tablet support around for years, but at nowhere near the level of integration the iPad has, and Google with Android just flat out says that the current version of Android isn't something they want to see running tablets -- wait until 3.0; Samsung apparently ended up doing a lot of new software creation/tweaking to get the the Galaxy running well on it.)
By this time next year, I think Apple really will be getting a run for its money on tablets...

I think a whole bunch of them screwed up bigtime by underestimating how important a capacitative screen is, compared to a cheaper resistive. If you go to ebay you will see quite a slew of very cheap Chinese Android tablets eg
The other big factor is battery life.
Interesting report - manufacturing flaw from failure to change a dull tool in time, resulting damage and subsequent crack development undetected by inspections.
Also interesting to note the number of GE CF6 engines which had uncontained failures (6 of the 7 other failures listed). I also recall 6 engine loss incidents with the very similar TF39 engine used on the Lockheed C-5A, where seal failure caused oil loss, bearing failure, blade failure and total engine loss (falling off) from resulting imbalance induced vibration. The first 5 fell into the ocean and were not recovered, then one fell on land and was recovered for failure analysis. The cause was an unanticipated (never seen before) high order resonance in a tiny spring causing abnormal wear, and the spring design change to fix the problem cost almost nothing.
It is not easy to predict the effects of every vibration mode in every component in a gas turbine engine, nor is it easy to get human inspectors to detect every flaw. Higher levels of automation are needed in both cases.

My roommate back in '85 worked at American Cystoscope Makers, later bought by Baxter Travanaugh . He used to design these O-scopes that they could inject into your veins and arteries, and look around. They had thousandth inch wall thickness sleeves inside that moved back and forth across each other. This dude is smart. Anyway, P&W contracted them to make an O-scope (they used the one they sell to horse veterinarians) so they could look down inside their engines' combustors, which were failing.
The other way is a near full breakdown of the entire engine.
They wanted to look in there, run it for a time, look again, ad infinitum until they saw the flaw develop.
Of course, nowadays, one would simply shove a bluetooth camera down there. That stuff wasn't around in '85. Just eyes on in the o-scope was all there was. They didn't even have a way to get it onto VHS or Beta then.
Of course "o-scope" in this post references cystoscopes and endoscopes and the like.
