Tell me about it. It's quite ridiculous. These fools don't realize how much unnecessary confusion it creates. A few things to realize is that the most important factors are pin pitch, package width(assuming the pins are standard sizes), and number of pins. If you get those down then it doesn't matter to much unless your dealing with some crazy package. The hole point is to connect the pads to the pins. Fortunately there are not to many different pin pitches. The problem now with all this smd miniaturization BS if you're starting to find all kinds of crazy packages with weird shapes and pin configurations.
I believe that for most SSOP the main differences are the thickness and lengths of the packages. There are a few that have different pitch such as MSSOP but for the most part a SSOP is a SSOP.
I guess some people just like making up new s*it for the fun of it.
BTW, 8L-ssop is probably not an lssop but just a ssop(I've not heard of an lssop before). So it should be identical to a TSSOP with similar dimensions. A TSSOP being a "thin" version of a SSOP and a SSOP being a "shrinked" version of a SOP. Here the *shrinked* is significant and not meant to be the same as *small*.
8L most likely means 8 leads =3D 8 pin.

That site would require a uniform naming convention, and there ain't one.
The package situation is a mess.

Which part is it? You should always use the drawing in the datasheet OR find the drawing on the website of the manufacturer. There are many variations. Not only in row spacing but also in body size. I think I have about 6 different variations for SOIC8 in my footprint library.
