That's bogus. Collisions between gas molecules don't affect the net energy in the gas.

So molecules that are not within a container have no temperature definition? What???

I was addressing Rick's objections.

It's more believable when you consider the average behaviour of 1E6 repetitions of the single-molecule experiment.

It also helps explain why groups of people behave in ways that no individual would approve :)

The problem stated a closed system, so there is no heat transfer from the walls; or on a particle level, any gas collision is perfectly elastic with no energy gain or loss (except by Doppler shift if said wall has motion in the reference frame).

Internal collisions are important if the MFP is shorter than the length of the chamber; in that case, the piston would have to traverse its distance much more quickly (on the order of t = MFP / v_sound).

Curiously (or perhaps not), it seems more believable that a pocket of gas (many molecules) would thermalize as it expands. The single particle case is a thought experiment to consider why this should seem stranger than it is.
