The amount of base drive current needed is a function of collector current and Vce plus chip temperature.
For a 2N3055, 1 amp drive will get 10 amps at a Vce under 1 volt.

** Err - that is called a "quasi-complementary" output stage - which has many shortcomings compared to complementary.Several "tricks" were developed to reduce crossover distortion in class AB and B QC stages at low current levels - none totally effective.

that impressive. There has got to be something out there that would make retrofitting a driver to make a Darlington unnecessary.
Maybe, while even its 1960s to 1980s heyday it was not exceptionally good at any one thing; but it was reasonably good at almost everything in its class. Thus volume made it inexpensive and it became a favorite. Much like the 2n2222 (and 2n2907).
