16 earthquakes

We too live in the Ring Of Fire and have plans at our shop in case of earthquake. One part consists of making sure nothing is stored over 8 feet off the floor space (so it can't block exits or rain down on staff easily) and that any storage used over work spaces is only light weight items - empty boxes, etc..

Not much anyone can do to prevent or predict these things. Just have to keep it in the back on the mind with all planning and travel.

We've bolted most everything dangerous to the walls or ceiling.

We put a good hunk of a megabuck of footings and steel into this building, and it's going to be demolished next year for condos.

In 1906, some horizontal accelerations hit 1G. The first thing some people noticed was being flung out of bed and hitting the wall.

I'm a heavy sleeper, but that would wake me up. :^)

The most dangerous thing around here is snowy icy roads.. not too many this time of year. A lot of rain though, good for the corn.

We had about 1.5x the normal rainfall this winter. SF is blindingly green and the trees all look very happy. I'm going skiing next week.

Know the feeling. I worked in Sunnyvale right after getting out of college, and people would say did you feel that earthquake last night. And I would always have to say " no ".

Then I took a job at a satellite tracking station on Kodiak. And was shaving on Good Friday getting ready to go to a movie. And said to myself " I finally felt an earthquake. Now what should one do in an earthquake? "

I live in the Sierra Foothills and didn't feel anything but I am a fairly sound sleeper.
