Yes. The OP didn't specify a load. I loaded it with 450kohm :-)

The dilemma is that the transistor Ron has to be low to pump a lot of current into the L at low supply voltages, to store a bunch of energy. Parts like that, especially mosfets, wind up having a lot of output capacitance. The capacitance gobbles up the flyback energy.

It usually makes more sense to use a transformer, or a tapped inductor, and maybe a C-W type multiplier, to get high step-up ratios.

You changed it!

I never said that a 300x inductive boost was impossible, I said it was hard.

You're using over 2 amps and a monster transistor and a BIG inductor to get a simulated 450 volts. And you haven't accounted for core losses.

If 1 pF for the small cap, and 10 nF for the big cap, then 400 kV becomes 4 V on the scope. Although the 10 nF low voltage cap will likely already provide good protection (short when flash-over happens), I will still add a series resistor and 2 opposite polarity zeners in series to protect my precious analog scope.

Have not asked, but many of these China shops are just retailers, and would not know.

The NPN has since been replaced by a HexFET. It wasn't my original idea... a guy by the name of Josephson came up with the concept at Philco-Ford in Santa Clara in 1968 when John Welty and I swarmed the place and took over ;-)

But Josephson couldn't figure out how to control it (NPN beta, at that time, was 3 :-)

I solved that problem in 1971, with a rather clever way to measure emitter current, then subtract base current, using one transistor and three resistors ;-)

As for...

anyone with half a brain could wrap a controller around that and make it draw low current and be regulated. As shown, it delivers the required voltage with one single switch closure.

just curious, in the signature block is a familiar mask overlay pattern. All those minimum cuts are rectangular or square! You and I both know how much nature loves round, so why weren't these masks made with 'round' patterns? It seems that the etching would have been better AND the doping would have been better. Wouldn't the exposure have worked better, too? Did anybody try it?

You're not making sense. The huge inductor that you posted a pic of was from a CD ignition, which ran from 12 volts. Show us the inductor that sprongs 1.5 to 450 volts. Use a wide-angle lens.

So a "no load" voltage is what the supply produces on its non-connected leads.

I have made supplies that provide microamps at 1500 Volts. They get used in F-4 rear facing photon detectors and the noise figure is important to allow them to detect single photon events, such as missile launch flarings. If pushed into any real loading, the voltage collapses and they get very noisy.
