Looking for a sensor that will tell me when ferous metal passes within an inch or so and causes a beep or turns on light or vibrator. Anyone know of anything like that?

It's not a component; it's a system. It's not a single-piece "sensor" either; they use a tank circuit.

Hello

What you want is an inductive sensor, like ones made by OMRON. Specifically Omron make ones called E2E-X5Y..that sense metal closer than 5mm, ...X10Y works to 10mm. If you want to sense water inside a plastic tank, use capacitive sensors made by same Japanese company. Makes the task easy, but you need 24 volts DC from a Wall Wart (wall adapter) to power the devices. A relay will do the switching, and this part can be any 24 Volt DC relay..

Omron has a good web site for specs. Ebay is great for buying odd lots of these sensors. Search 'proximity switches'.
