Thanks to all who replied to my post about driving a simple LCD.
Thanks especially to Dave Platt who suggested the NXP 89LPC94xx devices. The '9408 could have purpose designed for the task with an onboard LCD controller plus it also has a 10 bit ADC and 512 byte EEPROM both of which I was looking for too. In 1k+ it's a resonable $2.93 too.
Incidentally, it's only in LQFP packaging. How do prgramming adaptors work for those ? I'm curious how a socket would grip the leads. I've intentionallly only previously used PLCC parts of this type before.
