1.5uh adjustable inductors

Hi everyone,

Sorry if you're all a bit fed up of part requests, but I'm going insane trying to find 2 1.5uh tunable inductors for a small radio telescope (basicaly a 20.1MHz AM receiver). I used to see these all the time in my distant youth of stripping down any bit of equipment I could get my hands on, but I just can't find a source in the UK or anywhere else. Tied RS, Farnell, Rapid, Maplins and a load of other suppliers listed on ham radio sites.

Any help is really appreciated. If anyone needs background, the project is a NASA Radio Jove receiver. These are the only 2 parts I need to complete the damned thing! Best regards, Mike

Yea I've checked them both out and neither have a 1.5 - Mouser were the closest but minimum order was 500 and that's a bit out of my range at the moment. One of the larger on-line parts retailers here in the UK have a few listed but are marked as discontinued. I thought they were widely used parts, from AM radios to theramins, I've seen plenty of schematics and projects that use them so surely thay can't be that hard to find! I have a few old radios I could rip some out of, but I don't know an easy way of finding out what the inductance is of an inidentified part.

Try the Aussies. Search for Silicon Chip Magazine and you'll be led to vendors who will ship.

You could try

who also ship but I don't see any there.

Had a look to the Silicon Chip Online site and couldn't find any working links to retailers. Maybe I'm just going mad but surely, the circuit was designed THIS YEAR so I just can't understand why this part is so tough to get hold of. If it'd been designed in 1982 I could understand it...Thanks for the help anyway. Anyone else got a UK based clue for me?

Just checked them out, no luck. Plenty of fixed axials on a couple of them, but no adjustables. I've mailed the designer of the board now to see where he gets his parts from!

OK. It's a pretty small inductor - he may just wind them.

What configuration is required for the inductor. I *assume* for the moment that you want slug-tuned. What size limitations, and wire spacing for mounting to the board. I may be able to wind you a couple, but I'm not sure the form would be the same for each of them - I need to find my stash of small coil forms.

Hi Don,

That's exactly what I'm trying to find out from the designer :-) I have a suspicion that the project is going to grind to a halt since it also uses two LM387s which are nowmore trouble than it's worth to get hold of :-( Oh well, love will find a way! Thanks to all for the help.

I suspect that 1.5 uH would be a "wind in space - squeeze turns to adjust" type of coil.
