Whjat a good fritzng we've just experienced.

It was only a short black out (brown out?) that most of the computers didnt notice.

First clue that something was wrong was the mail server being inaccessible. a bit of a fiddle part and restart and oh, it is the network cable. Nope, it is the Netgear 8 port 1Gb switch that came as a freebie and we've had over a decade +. no major loss in value, but mutter mutter, just about every switch is in use.

Time to drap out the old 3Com 24 port managed switch as a temporary workhose. the 100mb throughput will only affect background stuff as both the major desktops run off the firrt switch off the nbn fibre. It is a noisy beast and at one stage I'd removed the pair of cooling fans looking for replacements, whch didn't eventuate. So it was locate those, stuff them back in and patch it in.

Then to work out why I was unable to connect to the headless torrent server. Nope it wasn't the networking, Hmmm, what? Carry to the testing area and watch the boot up. Hmmm "usb over current status detected".

That provided an amusing few hours reading the various suggestions to be found on the internet. Clearly a lot of people make suggestions without a clue as to the problem.

Considering this boxen has funtioned as a headless server since it was purchased, despite the copious "something metalic/bent pins in a usb slot" suggestion, it has to be a failute in the mobo/manfacturing as the only usd device ever inserted was whilst testing each slot to make sure.

Hmm, how old? It seems it wasn'tthat log ago. Hmm, no paper work in the folder, so back to the website of the mob i ordered it from and hmm

16/1/2019, so should be just in warranty. I think AMD actually give a two year warranty.

Anyway, print out a copy of the invoices so I don't have to remeber numbers and details when I apply for the RMA. Fiddle around and eventully wonder why the printer isn't doing its bit.

Yep, no light and it is unresponsive. A bit more power cable swapping and plugging and definitely dead.

The only bright spot is now SWMBO'd/CFO will not have to think of a reason to buy a better fabric printer. That usually means cover/no justification needed for a few ancillary purchases I want to make .

Oh well, every cloud has a silver linning, but I don't think it is that bright that it obscure the $$$ for a 10Gb managed hub.

Just venting.

Which reminds me that I didn't actually test it with another plug pack .I think the one it was using has been around a lot longer than the switch and actually came from a early printer server of the SIO/PIO.

As to fabric, these days it means cardstock with a thin layer of cloth attached. They are apparently sold at wollies, coles, and speciality shops. Alternatively, you can actually make them up yourself by ironing "freeza" paper to a bit of cloth than trim it to a size that fits the printer. the trip is whether the rollers will grip and feed it and your fabric doesn't drop threads through the printer works.

Apparently popular with quilters and other textile artists where you want to incude images. Stuff like family tree quits, speciality theme quits where you can not get commerical fabric already in that theme or you want very specific images, like particular motor cars and the like.

As to dot matrix, I'm still holding onto my NEC pinwriter incase I every work out how I can replace the driver foam in the ribbon cartridges. A belt of WD40 or even some of the bulk ink would give a good text printer that does coarse graphics at as lot cheaper cost than any inkjeet/laser printing. a few years ago, you could still by new electric parts as there is apparently quiet a few still working around the globe.

Addendum. The reason I didn't try a new plug pack, is that the power Aight was still on, but none of the ports illuminated when a cabvle was plugged in and passed traffic. So it is a fried chip somewhere..

If it was aplug pack, I do havcew a crate of plug pack but it it a question of finding the right voltage and sufficient curret with the right polarity and centre pin size. although there is always the option of cord cutting an soldering.

Actually the main point of this whole sorry state of affairs is that it tells me that the surge suppression on this power circuit has finally all died and I need to replace one of the five GPOs with at least one new GPO. When I realised that, I checked the indicator bezels and all five are now dark.

Hmm, I have one of those sitting in a cupboard or box around here somewhere. Haven't used it since my move to NBN fibre since the new router has 4 Gigabit ports.
