Why bother increasing the cost/complexity of the Pi when it's easy for the user to add that feature anyway?

Its already there.
You can safely power it off when the only LED still on is a steady red.

Well it's even easier to add a WiFi dongle, but that didn't stop them adding built in WiFi!
Seriously, I know how to wire a few LEDs in series with resistors, but by the time you've got it connected up it's either a piece of veroboard on the end of an inconvenient trailing wire, or something built like a fragile Christmas tree on top of a 2x3 header. Or there are solutions like but that's expensive and overkill for just adding an LED or two.
Or is there a cunning construction technique I've not thought of?

Yes, with recent firmware on Raspbian (since about 6 months? not sure). Just before power down the green LED blinks 10 or 11 times then goes off, leaving the red one.

Recent? I see the same. Mine is from August five years ago and has only 256 Mb memory Has I bought it two months later, I would have had a half Gb.

Firmware gets updated with normal software updates, once in a while. Check with "uname -a" and/or "vcgencmd version". Either will display a date.

How can a firmware update make my memory bigger?

Thank you for this information.

Why do you think anyone suggested that it would?

A. Dumas wrote about firmware. I can't see a relation to what I wrote.

you were original referring to the Red led illuminating for safe shut-down
this feature would have been added as part of a firmware update.
