SquareTrade

Anybody got info on the "SquareTrade" warranty service? I bought a new VCR on ebay, and have been getting emails about a $19.99 3-year extended warranty. Are they legit?

They sound like spammers (you didn't request or authorize them to e-mail you did you?).

Do you really want to do business with spammers?

It depends on your definition of legit.

If the seller is good you don't need it.

If the seller is bad it won't help.

BTW, Radio Shack once offered me a $5 warranty on a $1 mouse pad.

The initial email was sent by the selling vendor as an agent for "SquareTrade."

As a rule, NO! But I don't *really* consider email from a vendor I purchased a product from as SPAM. This seems to be organized by ebay.

The seller of a product is rarely involved with warranty service, especially when the product was purchased mail-order. The manufacturer is responsible for warranty satisfaction.

$19.99 for a 3-year warranty on a VCR seems like a good deal depending on the terms. I read the Service Agreement at SquareTrade's site, and I am not impressed. Too many loop-holes for them.

That is why I asked for others opinions on what type of a company they are (ie. do they constantly use these loop-holes?)

Was it from the vendor that sold you the product? If so, it is probably 'legal spam'.

or someone harvested your e-mail address from ebay?

I know of no happy SquareTrade customers. In and of itself that isn't enough to condemn them but still . . . .

Ah, but do you know of any *unhappy* SquareTrade customers? Or do you just not know ANY SquareTrade customers, period?

Nothing quite that sinister.

Ebay marketplace vendor "ABC" sells a product. A few days after receiving the product, consumer gets email from vendor "ABC" saying "...have we got a idea for you." Methinks "SquareTrade" has a deal with multiple marketplace vendors on ebay.

My own experience with ST and the experience of those I have contacted has been universally dissatisfactory.

YMMV. But don't count on it.

So ebay appears to be a spammer supporter. [unless you checked a little 'spam me for free' box when you joined ebay or when you bought from vendor "ABC".{you should NOT have to UNCHECK any boxes, they should default to 'do NOT spam me' and require an affirmative action on your part to check them}]

Permission to e-mail me is NOT transferable nor open ended.

If I give company ABC permission to mail me, it is limited to products that THEY sell and that I have told them I am interested in hearing about.

If they ASSUME I want any email from them (or their 'associates'), other than directly related to my particular order, that will be the LAST order they ever get from me.

I use 'tagged' email addresses or use '

' to generate a unique address so that I KNOW to whom the address was given.

If they missuse it, they 'abuse' my trust and I want nothing more to do with them.

If we make clear to ALL vendors that we will act this way, they WILL get the message and stop spamming.

Guy had the ST symbol on his listings, but refused to negotiate at all and the amount was less than $25 so I saw no point paying $25 for more 'help'.

has more tales.

I got together with other unhappy 'customers' and drove him off eBay.

Hi!

What you needed to do was to figure out how to get six replacement mouse pads out of the deal.

(Yes, I'm kidding.)

Hi!

I've seen a lot of things sold on eBay by sellers that use SquareTrade services. I've even bid on a few, and so far it seems that there is

*nothing* SquareTrade won't put a warranty on. Two notable items I've purchased come to mind as having carried an offer for SquareTrade warranties--an IBM 8507 CRT display and a ~1988 era IBM M-ACPA sound card.

How they think they'd replace either item--or even offer "reasonable" replacement price--is beyond me. I would say they certainly have a pretty good chance of using those loopholes.

That is a beef with a vendor, not with SquareTrade. My original question remains.

Everyone was PO'd at ST for the total lack of interest. ISTM it was a just a way for eBay to pass the buck but do nothing except maybe make more money. They are slightly better now I'm pleased to say.
