Sony CD player CDP-H6600 problem

I have a problem with my Sony CD player model CDP-H6600. It now often indicates "no disc" even when there is one. Switching on sometimes causes a rattling noise, which appears to be the laser-lens moving up and down. Sometimes it runs normally and still produces good quality sound which probably indicates the laser still to be working properly. Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be and how to cure it ? I would love to extend the life of this machine which has done so well for many years. I have carefully tried to clean the lens but that doesn't seem to have had any effect. The laserunittype is KSS 240A. The CD player is part of a midi/mini Sony set (type MHC 6600) which I bought around 1992/3 in the UK.

Grateful for your advise. Rob

If you look at the small servo PCB under the deck, you will see several small surface mount electrolytics. There are usually three, one after the other, along one edge, although there is more than one version of the board. It is very common for these to fail after the length of time that you've had it. They actually sometimes leak, and attack some nearby through plated holes. The vibrating lens is a typical symptom of failure of these caps. A word of warning here though. Only replace with similar value and voltage rating surface mount types, as originally fitted. *Standard* radial or axial caps with the leads formed to fit the original pads WILL NOT WORK.
