Hmm, they say the efficiency is up to 92% full load, makes me wonder what it is on average at more typical load. Sounds like those things burn up a lot of extra juice.

As noted above, the core saturates every half-cycle, so there are big core losses due to hysteresis. These transformers are notorious for running hot. Hence, reduced efficiency.
