SABA cd-262 cassettedeck - mechanical problem preventing tape reels to turn

No way to get the casette reels to move neither in PLAY nor in FF or REW. Idler was slipping against the take up and supply spindlers. Idler tire replaced. Situation improved but still not enough. Spindlers now turn when no cassette is mounted, but still blocked with a cassette in.

Spindlers turn gently (they are free to turn) when operated manually. Force of the idler against the spindlers is very low due to relative positioning of the three elements: idler, takeup and supply spindlers (a design weakness...nothing can be done about that!). My impression is that the white spindlers plastic has become too hard and thus slippery. Something has to be done on the spindlers' plastic to get the idler grip again...

Right? Any tip??

Thanks in advance.

check spool braking and backtension (often a tensioned stiff wire or metal band ), maybe a spring of some kind has come off part of the idler mech. it would be ideal to find a similar transport to compare (I know, then pigs might fly!) good luck,

Thank you guys! I was trying to figure out what can be done on the spindlers... let say: clean with this chemical... clean with this kind of abrasive .... or: do not touch them with any abrasive ... glue this stuff over them.... ecc.ecc.

By the way, does anybody know an Internet supplier for SABA spares? I could try to get the entire spindlers/idler subassembly... I googled but found anything.....

I wouldn't try anything other than cleaning spools with alcohol at this stage. You don't want to cause irrevocable damage if spares are hard to come by. try tonbandwelt.de forum if you haven't already, they have a section on cassette decks.

How old is it? most more recent SABA stuff was made by Thomson.....

Got it! I have taken apart the spindler/idler subassembly and I have carefully cleaned up the spindlers edges with sandpaper n.140. Now the grip is restored and the problem has gone.

Thank you very much guys!
