Leaving out any 18v vs. 40 volt issues, the two batteries have totally different form factors - the 40 volt battery could never physically attach to 18 volt Ryobi tools.
I have both, 18v for light duty tools & 40v for a lawnmower. The batteries are *not* interchangable. Perhaps he's thinking of the 2 diferent capacity 18v batteries, they are interchangable.
