Here's a photo of what my screen looks like after I replaced its CCFL backlight tube. Obviously, something's gone wrong:

it seems like the problem is with the TAB and/or TCP of the display, and it can be fixed (although at another page of theirs it says that vertical or horizontal lines can't be fixed:

What kind of problem does it look like, and is it likely that it can be fixed? I have no idea how I got this problem in the first place as I was very careful when disassembling/reassembling the LCD panel.
Seems like I warned against replacing this yourself; however it was probably worth the chance of fixing it. It looks like some of the LCD contacts are no longer making contact.
After I successfully fixed my wifes Dell 700m backlight (but cracked the screen), I ended up buying a complete panel on ebay. The cost of attempting to fix the backlight was about $25 plus a fair amount of time. The cost of a new LCD panel was $149 plus shipping. It only took
10 minutes to replace it and most of that time was spent looking for a screw I dropped.
Would I attempt to replace a CCFL again? Probably.
Yeah, but it also looks like there's bad contact somewhere as when holding the LCD panel at a certain angle I get a desktop picture. It could probably be the ribbon cable that goes to the computer as it could have gotten damaged when I removed the metal tape that covered it. These things are obviously very hard to diagnose!
That sounds very cheap! Was it new as in "brand new, unused", or new as in "a second hand, but working replacement screen"? In any case it beats having to scrap an otherwise fully functional laptop. The LCD panel I would need costs around $300 to 500 plus shipping, brand new. I still wouldn't know if I'd get a pixel perfect screen though, like the one I have now.
