Pioneer XR-P470C Mini system CD section duff

Hi, I've recently bought a secondhand XR-P470C mini system which has a duff CD section and would like some advice as to what is likely to be wrong with the CD unit.

At present, the units CD tray will open and close, the unit will change CDs (3 can be used) but after going through a check of all three CDs the unit displays "No Disc". All I've tried so far is inserting a CD head cleaner disc to see if it was muck on the lens but to no avail.

Aside from the CD trouble the unit and its remote control are working very nicely and played through my B&W DM-610 speakers sounds fine.

I'd be grateful for any insights you gurus might have on the problem.

Thanks very much

This carousel model is not one that you see very often, and I'm struggling to remember if it uses a genuine Pioneer deck and laser, or one from Sony, which some of their models do.

Unlike other manufacturers' lasers, Pioneer's are extremely reliable, and it is *very* unusual to have to replace one. Likewise, their CD signal processing circuitry is very well designed and reliable, and seldom gives rise to a 'real' fault. The only two things that they usually suffer from is being in need of a clean, and the lens falling out. Attempting to clean with a cleaner disc will do no good. Pioneer usually warn specifically against using cleaner discs in their user manuals. The lens must be properly cleaned manually with a cotton bud moistened - not wet -with isopropyl alcohol preferably, or plain water if no IPA available. Polish gently with the dry end of the cotton bud. If you find when you go in there to clean the lens, that there isn't one - just a hole in the top of the laser - you will almost certainly find that it is rolling round in the bottom somewhere. If you do find that is the case, it can be successfully reattached, but there are a couple of things that need to be looked out for, and care taken over. If your lens is off, either post back, or contact me direct off-group, and I'll go through what to look out for.
