philips dvd962sa defect

Dear all,

I have got a somewhat strange problem with a philips dvd962sa dvd/sacd player. When I put in a disk it will read it for about 2 minutes and then give an error. After that it won't spin the disk up to the right speed and does not read the toc.

When I power it down and leave it alone it will read the first disk I put in, it seems to work again but after 2 minutes it gives the same error.

I thought it might be a power supply issue, but since I cannot find a servicemanual I don't really now where to start fixing. Anybody who could help me out on this?

Thanks in advance,

Martin Straver

Maybe the sled assy is sticking when it gets to a certain point about two minutes into a disc. Look for dried grease, damaged gears, dirt or other obstruction, slipping belt, etc.

(You haven't mentioned if this player is newer, older, cheaper, more expensive, etc.)

Anyway, generically speaking, you could get lucky and have some minor obstruction preventing the sled from moving much. Otherwise probably out of luck on this one.

I recommend Pioneer. Their players still seem to buck the odds with respect to reliability.

Philips is the worst sort of junk from the worst sort of company. I say this having had some experience with their product over the years.

The player is from 2002 and had a retail price of 500 euro. I got it for

10 euro because the remote was missing. When turned on I became aware of the other problem.

Since I am on a tight budget now I would prefer to fix this player.

Btw, I am sort of a philips fan and think not all the stuff they made is crap ;-)

When I slammed Philips I was referring to their US product. I will allow that their Euro stuff may be better, though I have my doubts. Obviously you should use and enjoy anything you like.

The stuff they sell over here is mostly inexpensive but even by that standard, doesn't measure up. Their customer service is terrible, product mostly unserviceable, tech support and phone service terrible. They have a well-documented problem even paying customer rebates on consumer equipment.

Technical and parts support even on flagship models is spotty at best. If I spent thousands on a Philips product, then was told 2 years later "sorry - part not available - no substitute"...

they'd be talking to my lawyer.
