Partially black screen on Panasonic PV-M2058 (TV/VCR)

Mar 15, 2005 4 Replies

I have a Panasonic TV/VCR combo that started displaying a black rectangle over the center ~80% of the screen. The black rectangle disappears temporarily when the volume is adjusted or when the channel is adjusted, returning in a few seconds. When the black rectangle disappears the image is OK. When the rectangle is present, the outer edge of the image also looks OK. This is observed with both cable and VCR signals. There are no problems with sound and the OSD adjustments all respond normally.

Any ideas what this is about, and sugestions for fixing this?

Thanks in advance, AFZ Panasonic PV-M2058 November 1998 Serial K8AA26685

Turn OFF the close caption in the Menu,s.

Thanks a lot Kip!

That did it. It turns out that the closed caption settings that have "Text" in their description ("Text C1" and Text C2") both cause this behavior. The others ("Off", "C1" and "C2") do not.

I am not sure why this is so (Kip?), but this solved the problem.

Thanks again. AFZ

Yes, the CC1,CC2 modes are for getting the captions, the text1 and text2 are there for the sole purpose of displaying a blank black square in the center of the screen. One of the wonderful government mandated additions to all modern sets, because there of course are people that enjoy that black square and it "needs" to be required ;-)
