OT How do these water coolers work?

These small personal water coolers have a white square box behind the heat sink. 12v is applied to them and one side goes ice cold the other side gets hot. What is in these things that make them work?

Sounds like a plain old peltier junction heat pump... google for those terms

They use a peltier module, it's essentially a bunch of thermocouples wired in parallel and used in reverse. If you heat one side and cool the other though they will in fact produce a voltage.
