Iron anti scale device

Hi, ive been repairing a rowenta steam iron, and ive come across a strange component which im hoping someone might be able to tell me about. its basically a gold plated wire gauze, that is located within the steam chamber in the sole-plate. has it got anything to do with the anti-scale sytem? thanks
