I was given a Pioneer A05 dvd writer. The owner tried to update the firmware but after he re-booted, it stopped working. No light, tray wont open, bios does not detect it. Tried it on primary and secondary ide, and as master/slave. Has anyone ever resurrected one of these things? Im aware that they're not very expensive but it would be nice to put it back into service.

Will the firmware update software detect it? You could probably find the EEPROM on the board and flash it with an external programmer if all else fails.
Try reloading the original firmware, not the latest version. It's possible that he fried the eprom when trying to update, however replacing it should be the last option. Try reburning it first. It's possible it may need to be removed and reburned in an eprom burner, something you may be able to get done at a local computer repair shop.
Try going over to the forums at sysopt.com and asking someone there, there are some very knowledgeable techs there.
