The slow occurrance really sounds like a capacitor, are there any of those large mylar caps in the deflection circuit? I've had those fail, it's rare but it happens.

I agree, which is why changing the electrolytics was the first thing I tried. I'd have to reverse engineer more of the circuitry to determine which other caps could be involved. Sure wish I could locate that schematic.
