Hello good people out there. Please i would like to find out which of these 2 is good for real world projects, PIC and the AVR line of micro controllers? thank you.

What are you trying to do? What language to you want to use? Assembler? The PIC is a bit tedious. C? avr-gcc is cross platform and free. The Microchip C compiler is limited in the free versions. Are you looking for a development board? An IDE. They are available for both. Something a little more polished? The Arduino arguably is more capable than Parallax's Basic Stamp.
The first step is defining your requirements.
