Q:What is the CyberDisplay and how would I use it?

You can think of the CyberDisplay as a new class of monitor developed specifically to be used in ultra-portable information devices of all types. Like the desktop monitor, the CyberDisplay is capable of presenting lots of information and presenting that information in the same format we are used to seeing on our desktop monitors Q What are the main advantages of the CyberDisplay? A The CyberDisplay has all of the advantages required to present the same information content that can be presented on a desktop monitor, or notebook PC monitor, but it can be used to do this in small personal information products such as cellular phones, digital cameras or other consumer products. The displays are all small (less than .24 inch diagonal), present superb images, and are easy to design-in. Q Where can I get a JVC CyberCam or Mustek Smart 350? A Consumer electronic stores like Circuit City, Sears, Best Buy, carry these products. Q How do I interface the CyberDisplay to my OEM device? A The various displys only need a few gates of digital logic, a couple of D/A converters, and a couple of Op Amps in order to be interfaced. The OEM can easily design the required interface using Kopin provided technical specifications and application notes. For more information OEMs can request copies of the technical specifications.. Q Can I use my interface cable, or must I use the cable provided by Kopin? A Kopin provides a standard cable for interface; however, we also work with OEMs to design custom solutions appropriate for their needs. Q What is the operating voltage of the CyberDisplay? A The standard display logic runs at 3.3V to 5.0V while the display itself operates at 9V, similar to LCDs. This allows for a simple, standard set of electronic interfaces. Kopin has introduced the patent LVV technology which significantly lowers the logic voltage from 3.3V to 2.1V. Q Where are the drive electronics located and how much space will they require? A All of the display drive electronics are located right on the display. This includes the scanning shift registers, the clock, the level translators, the transmission gates, and of course the pixel transistors. The only other electronics needed are to interface the customer's system to the CyberDisplay. Q How many versions of the CyberDisplay are available? A CyberDisplay is a family of displays of which currently include 320, 320C,
640C and 1280. We intend to continue development of higher resolution CyberDisplays and custom displays over time. Kopin has already demonstrated resolutions beyond SXGA in the laboratory.
It is our intent to continune to provide those display resolutions that are required by our customers for their products. In fact, not only will we provide them, but we intend to do so at the best prices available anywhere in the world. Kopin's long term product plans are quite simple really. They are:
- Higher resolution displays;
- Lower power requirements for displays;
- Lowest cost displays. When it comes to "virtual displays", Kopin will be the name you see first Q What are Kopin's long term plans for the development of small-format displays?
A Kopin intends to be a world leader in these technologies. Because of Kopin's rich heritage in Wafer Engineered materials, we will be able to hold our leadership position in providing small-format, high speed, high-information content displays that have low power requirements and are cost effective. Our plans are:
- Higher resolution displays;
- Displays that require less power; and
- Lower cost displays.
Remember, Kopin uses two very mature technologies in the development of the CyberDisplay. The first is a standard Integrated Circuit process and the second is a standard Liquid Crystal process. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent each year improving these processes. Kopin gets the benefit of all of this investment. Q Will the displays get larger as the resolutions increase beyond VGA? A The size of higher resolution versions of the CyberDisplay will depend upon several factors. First among these will be our customer requirements in terms of size, power consumption, and cost. Kopin will use the latest available technologies in materials engineering and IC manufacturing to make displays that are more integrated and cost affordable and which meet all of our customer requirements. Having said that, our customers are telling us to keep them small, so that is our plan. Q How fast is the CyberDisplay capable of running? A The monochrome runs at 72 frames per second and the color runs at 180 frames per second. This allows the OEM to design not only for color, but also for full-motion video. Q How does Kopin get the CyberDisplay to operate in a color mode? A Kopin uses a single crystal silicon process in the development of the CyberDisplay. This allows us to operate the CyberDisplay at 180 frames per second. These high speeds make it possible to implement a color sequential methodology to obtain color. This approach not only gives 17.6 million colors, the color images are much crisper and clearer than a stripe or mosaic pixelization approaches used by others. CyberDisplay colors are not smeared over three or four pixels using Kopin's methodology. The color images also incorporate Kopin's patented PixelChrome(tm) technology which makes the color images of the CyberDisplay are truly astounding. Q Why is Kopin's approach transmissive, why not use a reflective technology? Because the world is really transmissive when it comes to displays. All current notebook PCs are transmissive TN-LCD. Practically all current data projectors use transmissive TN-LCD. The investments made each year throughout the world in improving transmissive TN-LCDs is enormous. Kopin gets to take advantage of those investments. Additionally, transmissive displays are the norm for other reasons which include:
- easier optics
- better viewing under all kinds of lighting conditions
- smaller form factor
The hoped for advantage of reflective technology (which is more light output) is not feasible for small battery operated products due to optical limitations. Q It has been said by some that Kopin is really a technology company; not a production company. Can you respond? A First, we are pleased that we are viewed as a technology company. It's true that we are the leaders in these types of display technologies. But I think that the other implied question is whether Kopin is also capable of volume production. This question is easily answered. Ask Motorola, Siemens, Fuji, JVC or Mustek if Kopin is a company capable of large volume production. Ask UMC or some of our other partners if we're capable of large volume production. Of course we are, or these companies never would have aligned themselves with us. We are taking volume orders, and we are shipping in volume to both the camcorder and digital still camera markets today. Q Can you summarize why an OEM needs the CyberDisplay instead of another type of display? A There are really eight criteria for a display which will be used in the types of products we have discussed. Any display, irrespective of the technology used to make the display, must meet all six of these criteria or the display fails. The criteria are:
- The display must be very small
- The display must be inexpensive
- The display must present lots of information.
- The display must have minimal power requirements (<100mW).
- The display must be capable of color.
- The display must be manufacturable in large quantities.
- Inexpensive interface electronics must be available in volume.
- All system components must be available and have passed quality control standards.
There are many different displays using lots of different technological approaches that meet some of these requirements, but only the CyberDisplay meets all of them. I would add a number nine to this list. That is:
- The manufacturer must also have plans to take the display forward in terms of resolution, power, and cost.
As mobile devices get more capable, as digital cameras go to and pass mega-pixel resolutions, it will be an absolute requirement for a display to present more and more data, or better and better images. These requirements will mean at a minimum that the displays needed for these products must be able of presenting at least as much information as you'd see on a notebook PC screen, or a desktop monitor. How could you ever put that much information on a direct view display and still fit the display into a portable device? Clearly, that isn't possible. As you make a direct view display larger the power requirements get proportionally larger. Clearly that won't work. Consumers will not walk around with pockets full of batteries. Therefore, your only real choice is to use a virtual display in such products. Virtual displays that align themselves in time with the needs and capabilities of the products they are designed for. Anyone can show a lab prototype and suggest it may have a great future. Kopin develops and manufactures displays that fit all seven market criteria. That's why we believe the CyberDisplay represents a whole new class of monitors for ultra-portable devices.
