network problem

good day!!

i am managing a small computer network (composed of 50 workstations) connected to a DSL line. I use router and ethernet hubs (sorry, i do not exactly know the network topology)on this network. I notice that when i open only 3 to 10 computers, the internet speed works fine but when i power up all the stations, the internet connection runs real slow and disconnect many times. when i see the dsl modem light indicator, its ok but but the dsl modem's light indicator for the connection to the router's WAN port is off. when i inspected the router, the WAN port's light indicator is stable or solid (but the manual says that it should be blinking during data transmission). i think the router freezes. it happens many times this week whenever i power up all computers in my network. ps. router name is DI-704P. pls anyone in the net help me on this problem i encounter. it would be gladly appreciated. thnks in advance.

I suspect with such a lot of connections the poor little router runs out of resourses or some such problem. I think I'd be looking at using a more business orientated product from CISCO or the like.

Might be worth checking for a firmware update though.

Make sure you download the right version/country.

I also note they have several versions of this product including Rev B with "a newer faster CPU".

Before you go out and spend a ton of cash on a Cisco router you may not need, See if you have one PC or more tying up bandwidth. You could have a machine with virus or spyware broadcasting a ton of data. Connect PC's one at a time and keep an eye on things. Perhaps you will find the culprit.

You may also want to get rid of those hubs and put in a couple 24 port switches. Hubs broadcast all traffic to all IP's on the net. Switches are more effeciant at this.

It may also be worth you while to find a good IT guy to come in and look things over. They seem to be a dime a dozen these days.
