Increasing brightness of LCD display on radio

Hello people.

I have a pocket radio with a LCD display that shows current station frequency and if the radio is on AM, SW or FM.

However, the LCD display isn't very bright. (I have to put it against a source of light to be able to read it)

Q: How would I do to increase the brightness of this LCD display?

Reflective. I am considering mounting a small white LED near it, as if I put a white light (the flashlight from my cell phone) at it, the LCD is readable.

I found that by putting good batteries ("Power Alkaline"... normal batteries don't do it for long), the display is bright enough to be readable.
