A-B potentiometer replacement

I need a replacement potentiometer for a project I am working on and think I have found a suitable replacement, but am not sure, as they are not the exact same part.

The part I need to replace is an A-B Allen Bradley electronics Type EJ Extra Life 5K ohm part #EJA1N048F502M

The part I have found is Allen Bradley Type J 5k ohm part #JA1N200P502UA

Not knowing much about electronics etc. I thought I would ask here.

Any and all help appreciated.

Rockwell bought A-B in 86. They sold the resistive products division in the

90's. Thus, they will be of little assistance. Try Visay or MultiComp. The type J series was spec'd into most US military equipment. Sourcing has been an issue for procurement officers as well. You may want to just use the original J type you found and accept the fact the extended life option isn't worth chasing.

Yes if it will fit physically then it will work fine, but there are two basic type of pot, a linear or a logrithmic, the only difference would be that the resistive action might be compressed to one end of the scale. I know i didn't explain that too well but don't worry it'll work anyway. Pete

If a log taper is called for -- say for an audio volume control -- then substituting a linear taper will give you something very close to an "on-off" switch.

Those A-B pots didn't use a carbon film for the resistance element; they used a groove filled with some carbon composition -- that's why they had the higher wattage rating. Because of the difference in construction it would be very difficult to provide anything but linear taper, and in fact, I've never seen anything else.
