Home Assistant calendar card now has a week grid and toolbar

The hardest thing with any dashboard calendar is making it feel like a proper app instead of a flat list of text, and version 5.0.0 of Calendar Card Pro goes straight at that problem. Smart-Live adds a grid view and a toolbar to the card, and calls the toolbar the favorite new part because it makes the card look like a calendar app. From the walkthrough, that seems like a fair judgment.

Putting it on your own dashboard looks straightforward. The card installs through HACS and lives in a GitHub repository with roughly 1,200 stars. The toolbar and tap-to-open are switched off by default, and they get turned on in the editor under Card & Header and Actions & Refresh. Release notes list the few defaults that changed, so people upgrading should check them.

The details are what stand out. The grid view lays days side by side with all-day events on top, in the style of week views in Google or Apple Calendar, and all-day events also appear as multi-day banners above the time grid. There are three view modes: list, columns, and grid. Color-coded filter pills toggle individual calendars and family members, identical events from several family members can merge into one block with combined avatars, and round avatar icons can be linked from the local /www/ directory. Rules can rewrite event titles to condense detailed entries, birthdays with a birth year get automated age calculation, and tapping an event opens Home Assistant's own event dialog.

The example setup runs on a 1280x800 kitchen wall tablet tracking family schedules, waste collection, birthdays, and appointments, and a guide documents that family calendar configuration.

One thing is still open: custom buttons on the toolbar or calendar are not yet supported. Whether a requested back button should return to the previous dashboard page or follow a custom navigation path is undecided, though work on custom buttons is planned for the coming days.

The merging of identical events into one block with combined avatars is the cleverest bit here in my view. A family of four at the same dentist appointment would otherwise show four identical rows and eat half the screen. The trade-off is that you lose per-person detail at a glance, though the filter pills seem to cover that case well enough.

Question about the title rewriting rules: when a rule condenses a detailed calendar entry, does that happen only for display inside the card, or does it affect what gets stored? I am also curious how the merged blocks behave once two family member avatars are combined, whether tapping one still opens the single event dialog.

A concrete tweak for anyone copying the kitchen tablet setup: since the same calendar entity can be added twice with event-type filtering, one copy could show timed events only in the week grid while a second copy keeps all-day banners. That keeps the grid tidy on a 1280x800 screen without losing the multi-day overview at the top.
