It means that both transmitters put data on the bus at the same time, and the result is garbled and useless.

two devices talking at the same time. rather simple concept.
Unfortunately, unless your protocol deliberately precludes (or otherwise addresses) this possibility, it is possible that some nodes *can* see "somewhat" valid transactions on the bus (depends on topology).
