Grrr... The problem turned out to be that some demo code I had ru had set #pragma config DEBUG which apparently disables interrupts

Well, you may have solved that problem, but you haven't solved the problem of using a broken newsgroup program. Would you (and all the other newbies with the same problem) *please* learn to reply to posts rather than generating a string of unrelated posts?
